I'm a gua sha addict - there, I've said it! I have one in every bag, suitcase, fridge, by the sofa, and in the bathroom. Every moment is an opportunity for a quick once-over in my world!
The Benefits of Gua Sha
When it comes to my face, gua sha has been transformational. Over the past 18 months, I have made many health and wellness changes. Gua sha has helped shape my face, providing definition, reducing puffiness, sculpting my jaw, and brightening my eyes.
On my body, I use gua sha in multiple areas where I experience tension. Having suffered from severe neck pain and inflammation for a long time, I mainly focus on this area. Gua sha is the only treatment that relieves my pain, and I notice results almost instantly. Previously, I would see a therapist bi-weekly. Now, I can do it myself. This saves time, money, and the hassle of booking appointments.
Here is everything I have learned and the products I truly swear by – #thankmelater!
Gua Sha 101
Gua sha is a traditional Chinese Medicine technique that encourages blood flow and circulation. In today's world, it is believed to relieve toxins and inflammation through this enhanced blood flow. On the face, it has become popular for achieving that snatched jawline effect.
Understanding Gua Sha
When there are many toxins or tension in an area, it may turn purple. This indicates you have reached the maximum effect, and you need to stop. Continuing could cause the skin to break and hurt. The markings can last from 48 hours up to a week, depending on your body and tension levels.
Must-Have Essentials
An absolute must for gua sha is oil! Whether you choose olive oil, body oil, or some aromatic blend, oil protects your skin and helps the tool glide. This applies to both your face and body.
Warning: Do not use gua sha on aggravated skin, such as spots, cuts, acne, or bruises. It can worsen these conditions.
Technique Matters
Short, sharp strokes with firm pressure are most effective. This may be slightly uncomfortable but should never cause pain.
On my face, I focus on the jawline, cheekbones, and eye area. I have noticed a substantial improvement in my facial shape. Along with weight loss, eliminating alcohol from my diet, and mouth taping at night, gua sha has had a significant positive impact.
Consistency is Key
You won’t see changes in just a week, but if you stay consistent and do it properly, you will notice results. I try to fit in gua sha whenever I have a few minutes to spare—waiting in the car, brushing my teeth, or making a cup of tea. The more you use it, the better the results!
For an added cooling effect, keep your gua sha tools in the fridge. I personally love this for my facial routine!
